Information campaign on online frauds by the Greek Safer Internet Centre and the National Cyber Security Authority

At a time when online interactions and activities have increased rapidly due to the ongoing pandemic, which has seen more and more children and young people spend an increasingly high amount of time in the digital world, new forms of fraud are constantly emerging, making online safety education for users an urgent and primary need.

According to the annual statistics of the Greek hotline, Safeline.gr, the percentage increase in complaints and reports on internet frauds in 2021 (compared to the previous year) has reached a remarkable 40 per cent. The Greek Safer Internet Centre, in collaboration with the National Cyber Security Authority of the Ministry of Digital Governance, has therefore launched an awareness-raising campaign on how to protect users from various forms of online fraud.

The campaign aims to educate citizens on issues such as the use of strong passwords and how to recognise internet phishing (scam requests via email) and smishing (scam requests via SMS/text message) through two imaginative videos created with humour and simple language. You can watch the videos below (English subtitles are available).

Εσείς ξέρετε από passwords? (Do you know about passwords)

Εσείς γνωριζετε τις απάτες Smishing? (Are you aware of smishing scams?)

Additionally, a dedicated page on the website of the Greek Safer Internet Centre provides specific information on the most common cyber-frauds and online scams, and advice on how to identify and prevent them.

Lastly, members of the Greek Safer Internet Centre and the National Cyber Security Authority of the Ministry of Digital Governance regularly schedule educational webinars for high school students throughout the country to further raise awareness of online risks.
