BEE SECURE (an initiative of the Luxembourgish Safer Internet Centre) recently published its 2020 annual report. This edition marks the initiative's tenth anniversary and provides an overview of a year full of activities, most of which took place online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
More than 7,000 training sessions were conducted
To get the new decade off to a start, BEE SECURE redesigned its website and now offers a catalogue of training sessions for young children, teenagers, adults and senior citizens.
In the past ten years, BEE SECURE has conducted 7,199 training sessions. In 2020, 36 training sessions were held in new online formats, which were particularly appreciated by the participants. In the report, Elli Hein, a trainer at BEE SECURE, reports on her experiences and her view of the changes in young people’s behaviour over the past ten years.
National campaigns
At the beginning of 2020, a major national campaign was launched to raise parents' awareness of the responsible use of digital media in the family. The campaign focuses on the guide "Screens at home - manage, educate and guide" while an accompanying playful poster summarises the recommendations.
For the start of the school year 2020/21, the new awareness campaign "Are you sure?!" was published. It focused on the influence of images on young people's lives. Sexting and sharenting (meaning the practice of parents sharing content about their children on internet platforms) were the first topics to be addressed.
Significant figures
In 2020, the BEE SECURE Helpline registered 454 calls and 351 online enquiries via its contact form. The BEE SECURE Stopline, which provides a structure for the general public to report anonymously potential illegal content encountered online, recorded a total of 4,336 URLs, of which 2,665 URLs were subsequently classified as illegal.
Clear perspectives
In 2021, BEE SECURE will continue to develop new training concepts and expand its advisory and support services. A continuing focus will be placed on raising awareness among target groups, especially young children, caregivers (teachers, educators, and so on), parents, seniors, and people with special needs.
