Who is responsible for age assurance?

Companies that provide digital services, such as websites and apps, must check users' ages.

What are companies responsible for?

These companies must legally protect children and young people from harmful content and contacts. They need to verify if users are old enough to use their service, or make sure children can only access age-appropriate content

Laws like the Digital Services Act (DSA) and Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) require this.

How can companies monitor their age assurance methods?

Companies must make sure their age assurance methods work well, include everyone, and keep your data safe. Companies should regularly test if these checks are working as intended and make changes if they're not protecting children well enough.

It's also helpful to ask children what they think about age assurance processes and how they experience them.

What happens if companies don't follow the rules?

If companies don't follow the legal rules for age assurance, regulators can take action against them.
