Better Internet for Kids

As part of Safer Internet Day 2021, the Irish Safer Internet Centre hosted the #BeKindOnline Webinar Series for parents and educators.

In this online safety webinar, Mark Smyth, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, provided advice to parents on Empowering Healthy Online Behaviour in Younger Children.

In line with the klicksafe booklet "And then he wanted nudes", the family checklist offers an introduction to the topic of cybergrooming (sexual harassment online). Families can use the checklist to talk about warning signs, trusted persons and protective measures to prevent abuse.

When adults specifically approach minors on the Internet, this is called "cybergrooming". For example, children and young people are asked to send nude photos or to meet the perpetrators in real life.

The booklet provides information for parents, gives tips, and explains how children and young people can be safely guided in dealing with live content.

Not all rules from face-to-face teaching can be easily transferred to distance learning - this can lead to problems. With the poster "Our rules for video chat", klicksafe wants to help make digital lessons more positive. Since every class has its individual needs, we have only pre-formulated the three most important rules. Further rules can be negotiated and formulated individually in class discussions. This guarantees that the rules really address the existing problems.
