The Dutch helpline created a workshop to treat online safety for social workers and teacher who are working with young people with mild intellectual disabilities. This workshop could either be held by a helpline worker who is treating these topics with professionals, or professionals could use this workshop to educate and practice themselves on the topic,
We have received signals that some professionals find it difficult to discuss online life and topics such as sexting with the target group. A number of sections and questions have been created, for social workers and teachers to approach these topics. Young people with mild intellectual disabilities can be extra vulnerable online. For example it may be that they are easier to influence, have more difficulty indicating and recognizing boundaries, and are less able to oversee consequences.
Social workers could talk about online safety and sexting through a conversation opener, two case discussions, tips on how to engage in conversation about online sexuality and sample questions to ask. The interactive components are added to think about certain themes, their actions, to discuss and learn from each other.
The slides could be used for inspiration and encouragement to talk about sexting with the target group.
