The main focus of Safelyonline project is the improvement of online medialiteracy levels among children and young poeple through the extensive media literacy education of their parents. More concretely, in the framework of this project, Gezinsbond and Child Focus (Belgian Safer Internet Centre) have been offering training to parents about the online media their children use daily. With about 150 training sessions every year, we are able to reach 4,500 parents. Since autumn 2017, the training offer consists of 5 programmes: ‘Social media’, ‘Gaming’, ‘Internet and privacy’, ‘Cyberbullying’ and ‘Online relationships and sexuality’. In each programme, testimonials from youths, parents and experts are the central point. Via a quiz and a game of propositions, the participants are invited to think along and share experiences. Through all of that, they receive a lot of concrete, educational tips.
The conference are very interactive and felxible. They also target vulnerable groups.
In summary, these are our three main objectives:
- Stimulate and teach adults to include media literacy in their parental skills, with special attention to vulnerable parents.
- Offer qualitative and contemporary training(modules) delivered by experienced conversation leaders.
In the longer term: to make families more media literate.
With our training offer and the online modules of Safely Online, our goal is that parents:
- know more about the media use of children and teenagers;
- have insights into the importance of the online world of children and teenagers;
- have a positive attitude towards their children and their digital world.
In the longer term, we want parents to:
- apply parenting tips within the family;
- talk more openly with their children about the internet;
- ultimately become stronger and feel comfortable in the media education of their children.
