Online Romance Scams Booklet

Romance scams booklet aims to raise awareness about one of the most recent forms of cybercrime - online romance scams - which occurs when someone impersonates another person online, creating an emotional and affective connection, using this personal relationship to deceive the other person and obtain money, personal information or other benefits from the virtual romantic partner. This type of fraud can occur on different online platforms, including dating sites, social networks, messaging apps and online games, and is especially dangerous because victims often feel emotionally involved with the other person and end up sharing personal and financial information more easily. Awareness campaigns as this booklet can help prevent further victimisation by training the public to identify the techniques used in these situations, as well as reminding them of the importance of taking online safety precautions. In addition, these campaigns can encourage victims to report these crimes to the relevant authorities and seek help to deal with the emotional and financial consequences of fraud.
