Media Literacy is important also in the early childhood education. We can see the influence and the importance of media in every child group: how they play, what they talk, how they are dressed and with the toys they play. There is a core curriculum for early childhood education (ECEC) in Finland that describes media education as one important part of the comprehensive education.
With cooperation with ECEC professionals we created a guide for early childhood educators working with children from 0 to 7 years. The guide is based on the goals and principals of the core curriculum. We have tried to demonstrate following aspects: 1) How does the media literacy of small children develop, 2) How can teachers and other professionals support the development, and 3) what can the ECEC community do to better understand and support professionals working with small children. The guide is published in Finnish (2019) and in Swedish (2020) and it can be localised when it comes to structures and the idea. Every country should use their own curricula or corresponding plans while planning similar guidelines for educators.
