'Leukeronline.nl' - A unique online guide for professionals in mental health care

In 2021, the Dutch Media Literacy Network launched Leukeronline.nl: the online guide for professionals working in mental health care (in Dutch).

Many care counselors of people with a (mild) intellectual disability need tools to properly guide their clients in the use of online media. For example, how can they help clients prevent unpleasant situations, such as grooming or phishing? But also: how can they help them with safe and desirable applications of online media, such as dating, gaming and social media like TikTok?

Recent research shows that three quarters of professionals in mental health care experience that people with intellectual disabilities are often more skilled with online media than the caretakers themselves. The vast majority of this group requires, above all, more insight into online media. While they are positive about the effects of using online media on their clients, they are reluctant to guide their clients, often due to their own lack of digital literacy. Leukeronline.nl is an easy to use guide (in Dutch) and provides immediate, 'on the spot' answers to practical or pressing questions from care providers. It offers managers in healthcare institutions points of entry into making constructive, supportive policy.
