The Finnish Safer Internet Centre publishes a new guide for a sex positive media education approach for young people
This new guide from the Finnish Safer Internet Centre (KAVI, 2021) provides teachers and educators relevant and research-based information about sex and sexuality in the media that young people aged 13 to 18 are using. It offers tools and support to discuss these topics with young people, gives examples of sexual education in the context of media literacy, and contributes to a neutral and non-shaming discussion about sexuality and sexual cultures in the media. The author of the guide is MA sex educator Petra Kankare.
Latest helpline trends: Quarter 4, 2021
The Insafe network of helplines collects data about the types of calls received and this is analysed every three months to look at trends, and new and emerging issues. The most recent helpline data covers the period from October to December 2021. This reporting period saw over 19,000 contacts made to the helpline network (a considerable rise on the previous reporting period) and continued the overall upward trend in numbers of people reaching out to helplines. There were over 67,000 contacts made to Insafe helplines during 2021 – the busiest year ever, which underlines the importance of the services they offer.
Take action – tackle disinformation! Media literacy is more important than ever
Fake news travels very fast. According to findings from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology research, false news spreads six times faster on Twitter than truthful stories. An overabundance of information makes it hard for users to find trustworthy and reliable sources and, most importantly, identify false and misleading content online. The Facts4All – School tackling disinformation project recently launched an online campaign with the aim of raising awareness of online disinformation, while also providing guidance on how best to consume online content.
Italy promotes the conscious use of the internet on Safer Internet Day 2022
In Italy, the Safer Internet Day (SID) 2022 event was hosted completely online and made available via live streaming. A debate took place between students, parents and teachers – the whole school community – on how to help younger generations through a learning process for a positive use of the web, the technological instruments that are available, and everyone’s role in the good and appropriate use of the platforms.
Spotlighting youth voices in Safer Internet Day 2022 celebrations
Children and young people are at the heart of what we do. Indeed, they are the main benefactors of the Safer Internet Day campaign – and the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) agenda more generally – as we unite across the globe to provide a safer and better internet for them, and seek to equip and empower them with the skills, knowledge and support to benefit from all of the wonderful opportunities that the online world has to offer. Youth involvement was very prevalent in the 2022 celebrations.
Spain celebrated Safer Internet Day 2022 with both in-person and online events
On Tuesday, 8 February 2022, the Spanish Safer Internet Centre celebrated Safer Internet Day, joining more than 130 countries worldwide under the motto ‘Together for a better internet’. This year’s INCIBE event and activities have reached a higher participation from schools than in previous years, uniting children and teenagers on either side of the screen, both at the in-person event and through the online channels of the event.
Together for a better internet in Hungary for Safer Internet Day 2022
Safer Internet Day (SID) 2022 took place worldwide on 8 February, and several initiatives have been organised in Hungary by the International Children’s Safety Service (ICSS) as the Hungarian consortium-leader of the safer internet programme at the University of Public Service (UPS).

The German Awareness Centre klicksafe looks back on a very successful Safer Internet Day 2022
Although once again fewer offline events were possible due to the pandemic, more than 250 decentralised events took place across Germany in 2022. For its own Safer Internet Day (SID) activities, the German awareness centre klicksafe decided to focus on a digital strategy and move all activities online.
