About the award
Co-funded by the European Union, Safer Internet Centres across Europe strive to keep children and young people safe online through a range of actions and initiatives. Typically comprising an awareness centre, helpline, hotline, and youth participation services, Safer Internet Centres provide a wealth of content and services to support children and young people, and those who care for them: parents and caregivers; teachers, educators, and other professionals; and other stakeholders.
As part of their work, Safer Internet Centres develop numerous educational resources and videos aimed at helping teachers, parents and caregivers, and children and young people, to discover the online world safely. All of these resources can be accessed in one place via the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) resource directory, allowing users to search by national language, age, topic, or resource type.
Alongside their public-facing work, Safer Internet Centres regularly participate in network-level activities to build capacity, share knowledge and expertise, and remain alert to emerging trends and issues impacting the online space. One of these activities is a biannual resource competition, in which Safer Internet Centres share their latest and topical resources with counterparts in other European countries.
This new award, the "Best awareness-raising resource of the year", builds on that foundation, taking the winner and runner-up from each of the competitions over a one-year timeframe forward for a public vote by participants in the annual Safer Internet Forum. Onsite and online participants are invited to explore the four shortlisted resources above, and return on the day of the Safer Internet Forum to cast their vote for their favourite.
