Better Internet for Kids

During our Safer Internet lessons in Lithuanian schools, we noticed that many children under 18 years old, and sometimes under 13 years old, were playing the video game CALL OF DUTY. In this game the player takes the lead role in a variety of spectacular war scenes that creatively interpret real wars or future scenarios by recreating imaginary conflicts. Aggressive content, violent scenarios, graphic realism and realistic violence. Although Call of Duty is only a computer graphics game, some parts of it can be frightening and violent, especially for younger players.

During our Safer Internet lessons in Lithuanian schools, we noticed that many children were playing the video game FIFA, so we decided to create a guide for parents and teachers to help them better understand the rules of the game, the threats and the tools they can use to control it.

Youth participation in the digitalised world is nowadays a topic of high interest in the public sphere. The authors of this publication aim to bring new perspectives and varied visions to the key questions of understanding how young people interact with all the opportunities the digital space has to offer, and how they can use this space for causes relevant not only for themselves, but also for the democratisation of the societies in which they live.

The Portuguese Safer Internet Centre's notebook, brings together a range of tips to promote responsible and safe use of the internet. The fourth edition of the MOOC Cyberinformed Citizen Course course aims to combat hate speech, which promotes the easy, rapid and virtually uncontrollable spread of disinformation and poses a threat to democratic societies. The module begins with a definition of hate speech and provides examples of some of the rhetorical and discursive strategies used by those who engage in this type of speech.

Romance scams booklet aims to raise awareness about one of the most recent forms of cybercrime - online romance scams - which occurs when someone impersonates another person online, creating an emotional and affective connection, using this personal relationship to deceive the other person and obtain money, personal information or other benefits from the virtual romantic partner.
