Youth Internet Monitor

The Youth Internet Monitor is an initiative of Saferinternet.at and presents current data on social media usage among Austrian youth . Which social networks are currently popular among young users in Austria? Which networks are most popular with girls? Which are the most popular with boys? The Youth Internet Monitor, part of the EU initiative Saferinternet.at, has been studying the use of social networks by young people in Austria for ten years. The data collection was implemented with the support of the EU and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and conducted by the Institute for Youth Culture Research. 405 young people aged 11 to 17 from across Austria were surveyed.

According to the 2025 edition, WhatsApp was  the most popular internet platform among Austrian youth (total usage: 87%, of which 82% daily). This was followed by YouTube (total usage: 80%, of which 47% daily); Snapchat (total usage: 74%, of which 89% daily); Instagram (total usage: 73%, of which 78% daily), and TikTok (total usage: 72%, of which 87% daily). All platforms recorded growth compared to the previous year. New to the ranking is the platform Microsoft Teams, which is used by 35 percent of youth, placing it at sixth place.

The Youth Internet Monitor is an initiative of Saferinternet.at and presents current data on social media usage among young people in Austria. Question: ""Which of the following internet platforms do you use?"" (Multiple answers possible) / Representative online survey commissioned by Saferinternet.at, conducted by the Institute for Youth Culture Research, October 2024. n = 405 young people from Austria aged 11 to 17, including 200 girls. Variation range 3-5%.
