In a time where the COVID-19 global pandemic is still ongoing and a new conflict has surged in Ukraine, it becomes quite common to develop a feeling of powerlessness towards the current events. While it is a natural reaction to crisis situations, it generally comprises a mix of unpleasant emotions including, to various degrees, paralysis, intense sadness and apathy or resignation.

On Thursday, 3 February 2022, the student video competition for a safe and creative use of the internet came to an end with the final evaluations of the participants’ works. The competition was organised by the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus, of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth, with the support of the Cyprus Safer Internet Centre CYberSafety. The competition was once again held online due to the ongoing pandemic.

Today, the European Commission has adopted a new European strategy for a Better Internet for Kids (BIK+), with the aim to improve age-appropriate digital services and to ensure that every child is protected, empowered and respected online. This new strategy comes ten years after the first BIK strategy, and during the European Year of Youth, spotlighting the voices and ideas of young people themselves.

On Saturday, 7 May 2022, a series of activities will take place at various EU institutions to celebrate Europe Day (9 May). Better Internet for Kids (BIK) will participate in the in-person event with a dedicated space at the European Commission where the BIK agenda and initiatives will be showcased, alongside online safety games and interactive activities for children and young people from the Insafe network of Safer Internet Centres (SICs).
