On Tuesday, 7 February 2023, we celebrated the 20th edition of Safer Internet Day (SID), with events and activities taking place right across the globe. With a theme, once again, of “Together for a better internet”, the day called upon all stakeholders to join together to make the internet a safer and better place for all, and especially for children and young people. The day was a great success, and we are excited to share with you just a few of the achievements so far from the coordination level.

The Better Internet for Kids review of the year 2022 is released on the occasion of Safer Internet Day 2023, Tuesday, 7 February. During 2022, the European Year of Youth, young people showed their commitment to building an environmentally friendly, safe, and inclusive future. Their optimism was in stark contrast to the war on Europe’s borders and the upheaval for the world caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This report provides an overview of a multitude of stakeholder efforts to both protect and empower children and young people in their digital lives.

During the Media Literacy Week in 2021, the Dutch Media Literacy Network laid out a challenge: if we want social media to be a welcoming place for everyone, we have to start working together now. Because there is a lot at stake. Together, we can encourage a more positive social online behaviour. We promised that the network would continue with this theme in 2022. That is why, earlier this year, the network called on partners to commit to a more social online world, with the Social Online Together challenge. These are the winners for 2022.

The successful Dutch Media Literacy Week 2022 – Like and Cancel (4 to 11 November 2022) is now behind us. This year, the campaign to raise awareness for media literacy was geared towards promoting pro-social behaviour online. By standing up for another when witnessing offensive behaviour online, you’re making clear that it is unacceptable. If we work together, we can change the social norms enabling this kind of hurtful behaviour.
