World Press Freedom Day/Difference Day 2024

Today, on Friday, 3 May 2024, the global community comes together to commemorate both Difference Day and World Press Freedom Day. This year, the tenth festive edition of Difference Day is taking place at Bozar with the theme 'Speak Freely, Listen Respectfully, Different Opinions Matter'. This overarching theme, which first illuminated the arrival of Difference Day in 2015, reminds us of the fundamental values of this celebration.

Background

Established in 1993 by the United Nations, World Press Freedom Day served as a reminder highlighting the crucial role that the press plays in democratic societies. It is a call to action inviting governments worldwide to uphold their commitment to protect the right to freedom of expression. This day also marks Difference Day, celebrating freedom of expression and honouring people and organisations that make a difference in safeguarding and protecting these values.

“Speak freely, Listen respectfully, Different Opinions Matter.”

This theme encapsulates the essence of effective communication and the value of diverse perspectives. In an era prone to isolated information bubbles and division, it’s a powerful reminder of the need to foster an environment where every voice is heard and respected.
Indeed, in the digital realm, where information flows continuously, young people are also exposed to young minds to potential harm. As we celebrate Difference Day and reflect on World Press Freedom Day, we must consider the implications for young people.

Many challenges need to be addressed, from misinformation to protecting online privacy. Yet amidst these challenges, Better Internet for Kids takes the opportunity to instil in future generations a deep appreciation for the principles of freedom of expression and the importance of respectful discourse.

Learn more about the celebration and discover our work and initiatives:

  • Discover our collaboration with young people. Each year, a BIK Youth Panel is organised before and during the Safer Internet Forum (SIF), encouraging a group of youth panellists and ambassadors to voice their personal opinions and challenges and those of their peers they are representing at a European level.
  • Read the article where Diya, a BIK Youth Ambassador, represents Better Internet for Kids at the European Youth Week kick-off. She had the opportunity to address the challenges posed by non-traditional media platforms and the importance of media literacy in navigating the vast landscape of online information.
  • As we celebrate the freedom of the press, we also recognise the need to equip citizens with the skills to discern fact from fiction and to speak and listen with discernment. The #MediaSmartOnline campaign embodies the essence of Difference Day's theme, "Speak Freely, Listen Respectfully, Different Opinions Matter," by advocating for informed discourse and critical thinking in the face of misinformation.
