How to become a good player?
You already know how to play. But here's the thing: the best players aren't just good at winning. They're good to the people playing with them. Before the game, during it, and after it too.
But here's what only the best players know: being great isn't just about your score, it's about how you show up as a person. Even if the game looks nothing like real life, the players on the other side of the screen are real people. Just like you. What happens in the game affects how people feel when they log off.
The players that people actually remember are not the ones with the highest scores. They are the ones who made the game worth playing.
And just like a superhero, they don't only show up when they're wearing the costume. They show up in daily life too. When they see something wrong, they suit up to their costumes and act. A great player knows this.
We have our own heroes too. Want to meet the Gaming Guardians and find out which one would you like to have on your team?
Why is gaming great?
Gaming is absolutely brilliant. You build worlds, solve impossible puzzles, grow a character from nothing into something powerful. You discover skills you didn’t know you had and find ways of thinking you never used before. You enjoy it with friends, and continue to stay in contact in your free time too. And when the game ends, the conversation doesn’t. Group chats, forums, replaying the best moments at school the next morning, planning the next move, already thinking about what comes next. Your gaming world doesn’t stay inside the screen. It follows you in these conversations.
But like any world worth being part of, it is not always easy or peaceful. Sometimes someone says something cruel in the chat. Sometimes a stranger is a little too friendly, a little too fast. Sometimes a game is designed to keep you playing longer than you actually want to and you only notice when you are already tired and irritated and not sure why. Sometimes you see something that doesn’t feel right, and you don’t know what to do about it. These things happen to good players, even experienced ones. Nobody plays to feel bored, upset, or anxious. We play to have fun, to relax, to hang out, to feel part of something. To keep it that way, we need good players. Best players who know not just how to play, but how to play well to be the player who makes the game better.
Meet the Gaming Guardians
Think about the best team moment you've ever had: maybe one player was incredible in combat, another solved the puzzle nobody else could, or someone held the strategy forward while another kept everyone's spirits up. Every great team needs different skills and online safety works exactly the same way.

Some players notice scores. The Shield notices people. Maybe someone suddenly goes quiet in the game chat. Maybe a player keeps getting made fun of. Maybe someone sounds upset but says “I’m fine.”
That’s when the Shield steps in.
Sometimes it’s as simple as:
“Hey, are you okay?” “I am here for you” “Come play with us.”
And if something feels serious, the Shield knows it’s smart to:
● block,
● report,
● or tell a trusted adult.
The Shield knows something important: a great team protects each other.
Not everything online is real: some messages are fake, some links are traps, some people pretend to be someone they're not. The Scout notices things like:
● a stranger asking too many personal questions
● an offer that feels too good to be true
● a profile that just doesn't quite add up
● a link from someone you do not fully trust
● your gut-feeling says something is wrong but you are not sure what
Instead of clicking straight away, the Scout pauses and thinks: "Hmm. Something feels off." That one tiny pause can stop a really big problem. So the Scout:
● stops answering
● closes without clicking
● trusts the gut-feelings
● gathers evidence
● informs other players
The Scout's superpower isn't being suspicious of everyone. It's paying attention and quietly helping friends do the same.
Here is something that happens online all the time: something goes wrong, everyone sees it, and nobody does anything. Not because they do not care, but because they are all waiting for someone else to go first. The Spark is that someone.
The Spark isn’t necessarily the loudest or the most confident players. But when a moment calls for someone to break the silence, The Spark does it:
● A message in the group chat: "That was not okay" and encourage people to say ‘no’ too.
● A word to friends: "Should we do something about this?"
● A refusal to laugh along, to share, to pile on even when everyone else is
● When a friend is too scared to report something, Spark doesn't just say "you should report it." They say "let's do it together."
Here's one thing about courage: it's contagious. When one person speaks up, others feel brave enough to join in too. That one move can change everything.
The Spark makes sure problems don't stay hidden and becomes the first brave one to guide others.
Some problems in games keep happening: the same arguments, the same person disturbing other players, the same moments where the team falls apart. Most players move on with it. But the Shaper stops and asks: “why does this keep happening?” and “how can we make this better for everyone?”
The Shaper doesn’t wait for things to go wrong to do something. They build something good from the start.
Maybe that looks like:
● inventing a new team rule
● finding a fairer way to play
● calling a pause and reflect
● turning a bad moment into something the whole group learns from
The Shaper knows something the others sometimes forget: you don't have to wait for things to go wrong to make them better. You can just build something good from the start.
The Shaper creates the kind of online world everyone would like to play in.
Every great team needs all four
You probably recognise a little of yourself in more than one of these characters. Maybe you are mostly a Scout who easily feels off things but sometimes you find the Spark's courage and speak up when everyone else stays quiet. Maybe you are a Shaper with ideas who also has the Shield's instinct to check in on someone who seems off. That is not a contradiction, that is what a great player actually looks like.
You don’t have to be all four. But the best players carry a little of each: the Shield's warmth, the Scout's sharp eye, the Spark's courage, and the Shaper's imagination. Maybe not always perfectly, or not fully in every session but just a little more each time you play.
The moves don’t have to be big either: A message that says "are you okay?", a pause before clicking something suspicious, a "that's not cool" in the chat, a new idea that makes the game fairer for everyone. Every gaming session is a chance to notice something, say something, build something, or simply check in on someone.
And here is the practical tip: you do not have to do this alone. Share this with your friends.
Find out who is the Scout, who is the Spark, who is the Shield, who is the Shaper. Because the strongest teams aren’t built by one person trying to do everything, they are built by people who know what each other brings.
Gaming is amazing and it stays amazing when players like you decide to make it that way. With a little help of the Gaming Guardians, you can be the player who makes the game better!
