This report provides an empirical analysis of how Slovak primary and secondary school students navigate digital technologies, social media platforms, and online communication tools. Investigating both opportunities and online risks, the study maps students' platform preferences, digital behaviour, and engagement with emerging technologies, including AI tools and chatbots. It also explores online risks, including cyberbullying, sexting, and online meetings with strangers.
The findings demonstrate a strong correlation between online risk exposure and mental health indicators (anxiety, depression), highlighting that high family and school self-esteem serve as key protective factors against online harm.
Methodology
The study is based on survey research using a standardised questionnaire adapted from the Czech Safer Internet Centre (Centrum pro bezpečný internet/Univerzita Palackého v Olomouci) to enable future comparative Czech-Slovak studies. The report was authored by Juraj Holdoš, Angela Almášiová, and Pavel Izrael under the Catholic University in Ružomberok (Katolícka univerzita v Ružomberku) and the EU Kids Online Slovakia network, initiated via the Safe Internet Centre Slovakia (Centrum bezpečného internetu Slovensko).
