This series of debriefing report from Project MIMIc synthesises key empirical findings from an international multi-method research initiative examining how adolescents (ages 12–18) in Belgium, Slovenia, and France interact with digital and mass media.
Covering longitudinal surveys, daily diary assessments, and social media data donation studies, the reports detail how youth encounter and internalise "malleable ideals" across popular music, TV series, videogames, and social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat). Results outline trends in body image, sexualisation, performance-oriented self-concepts, political awareness, and digital well-being, while providing feedback, recommendations, and media literacy insights directly tailored to participating adolescents, educators, and policy stakeholders.
Methodology
Data collection involved a 3-wave longitudinal panel survey (N = 2,721), a daily diary study via mobile applications, content analyses of media (lyrics, influencer posts), and a social media data donation study (N = 507). The project was led by the Media Psychology Lab at KU Leuven (Belgium) in collaboration with the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and research partners, funded by the European Research Council (ERC).
Country or region of researched population
Belgium, France, Slovenia
