The Monitor Mediagebruik 7 t/m 12 jaar examines how primary school-aged children in the Netherlands interact with digital media devices and how parents manage their digital development.
Conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, the study reveals that children spend significant time daily on entertainment platforms, most notably gaming and YouTube. While parents recognise digital media as a valuable tool for learning and parenting, most reported that pandemic conditions changed their children's screen habits.
The report details parental mediation strategies, rules surrounding screen usage, and the ongoing balance between media benefits and potential digital risks.
Methodology
The study is based on quantitative online survey research conducted by CHOICE Insights & Strategy in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Peter Nikken. Data collection took place between December 2020 and January 2021. The survey targeted a nationwide sample of Dutch parents with children aged 7 to 12 years to gather structured insights into screen time metrics, device ownership, and parental mediation practices within households.
