The JIM-Studie 2025 presents an empirical overview of media consumption, device ownership, and information habits among German adolescents aged 12 to 19. With near-universal smartphone ownership, young people increasingly rely on digital ecosystems for communication, entertainment, and information seeking. In this edition, the rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools into school routines and daily problem-solving is highlighted, alongside evolving patterns in youth news consumption. 74 percent of 12- to 19-year-olds use AI applications for homework or learning (2024: 65%). Use for information searches has grown significantly – increasing by 27 percentage points compared to 2024, reaching 70 percent. The findings underline how adolescents navigate digital spaces while facing exposure to online risks, emphasising the continued need for targeted media literacy and digital safety initiatives.
Methodology
The study uses a nationally representative quantitative methodology with a sample of 1,200 adolescents aged 12 to 19 residing in Germany. Data collection was conducted between June 2 and July 12, 2025, via a combination of computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI) and online surveys (CAWI) executed by GIM (Gesellschaft für Innovative Marktforschung). The 2025 survey redesigned its tracking of media usage times to better reflect multi-device and background usage patterns.
