This Flash Eurobarometer report provides a comprehensive overview of European Union citizens' social media usage, news consumption habits, exposure to disinformation, and attitudes toward the EU.
Traditional media remains the primary daily news source, though digital and social platforms are widely used, particularly among youth. Although citizens frequently encounter disinformation on social platforms, most express confidence in their ability to recognise fake news, relying mainly on cross-checking.
The study also details user preferences for institutional content, influencer formats, and video news types, offering critical insights for public communication strategies across Member States.
Methodology
The study was requested by the European Parliament's Directorate-General for Communication and executed by Ipsos European Public Affairs. Between June 11 and June 18, 2025, a total of 26,121 interviews were conducted across all 27 EU Member States. The target population comprised representative samples of EU citizens aged 15 and older. Data collection was carried out using Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing (CAWI) via Ipsos’s online panels and partner networks, with results subject to standard statistical sampling tolerances.
