The European Union celebrates Europe Day on May 9, in honour of the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950, when French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community, laying the foundation for European integration and the EU as we know it today.
Every year more and more local leaders are organising activities on (or near) Europe Day, 9 May, helping citizens to recognise and celebrate the European dimension of their identity (local, regional, national, and European).
