Generazioni Connesse - Italian Safer Internet Centre

Profile last updated: January 2026

About our SID activities

For the 2026 edition of Safer Internet Day, the Italian Safer Internet Centre - Generazioni Connesse - will organise a hybrid programme combining a live national event with a wide-reaching online communication campaign.

The main event will take place at the Ambra Jovinelli Theatre in Rome from 10:00 to 12:30, with the in-person participation of over 500 students from the schools involved in the project. The event will be live-streamed to allow schools across Italy to join remotely.

Young participants will engage in discussions around three key thematic areas: digital well-being, artificial intelligence and deepfakes, and online grooming. The active involvement of the Youth Panel – the Safer Internet Centre’s Youth Advisory Group – together with the participation of authoritative guest speakers, will foster in-depth reflection and dialogue on these issues.

Further information on the institutional event and the full SID 2026 programme will be available on the Ministry’s website and on the Generazioni Connesse platform.

The topics addressed during the SID event will also be amplified through the social media channels of Generazioni Connesse and of the consortium partners, with the launch of the educational videogame The Game Changers for children aged 9 to 12. The communication campaign will include the release of videos and messages featuring the game’s characters and linking their stories to the themes discussed during Safer Internet Day.

As in previous years, the Safer Internet Centre will also launch the “Internet Safety Month” campaign in conjunction with SID. Within the dedicated SID 2026 section of the Generazioni Connesse website, schools and educational institutions will be able to submit, via a dedicated form, the activities they organise between 1 and 28 February 2026.

The Generazioni Connesse website will host a dedicated SID 2026 section showcasing the events promoted by the members of the Advisory Board and by schools from across the country.

What we are doing to create a better internet...

In line with the Safer Internet Day slogan “Together for a better internet”, the Italian Safer Internet Centre – Generazioni Connesse - promotes a collaborative and participatory approach that actively involves children, young people, schools, families, institutions and civil society.

For SID 2026, Generazioni Connesse, in cooperation with consortium members and the competent authorities, will organise the main national event in Rome on the morning of 10 February at the Ambra Jovinelli Theatre, with the in-person participation of around 500 students. In parallel, consortium members will organise additional local and online events, which will be showcased in a dedicated section of the Generazioni Connesse website.

Our action continues beyond the event through a comprehensive online communication campaign and the launch of The Game Changers, an educational video game for children aged 9 to 12. Designed for use in schools with the support of teachers, the game fosters digital skills and critical awareness through a playful and pedagogical approach, addressing issues such as phishing, hacking, cyberbullying, and screen-time management.

Within the project activities, a national research study will also be carried out by Skuola.net in collaboration with the University of Florence. The results of this research will be presented during Safer Internet Day and further promoted through the communication campaign.

In parallel, we promote the “Internet Safety Month”, encouraging schools across the country to share their activities and good practices, thus creating a nationwide community committed to safer, more responsible and positive online experiences.

By empowering young people, strengthening cooperation among stakeholders and providing innovative educational tools, we work every day to build, together, a better and more child-friendly internet.

About us

The Italian Safer Internet Centre – Generazioni Connesse – is the national reference point for information and support on children’s and young people’s use of online technologies and digital services, operating at both national and European levels. It provides a direct link to the Better Internet for Kids platforms established at the EU level and acts as a gateway for citizens, educators, and stakeholders seeking reliable resources on online safety.

The Centre works closely with other Safer Internet Centres (SICs), universities and public institutions across Europe, sharing good practices, contributing to research and surveys, and helping to shape a human-centred and sustainable vision for the digital society.

Established in 2012, the Italian SIC is the result of a long process of capacity-building and consolidation, which has progressively strengthened its role as the nationally recognised focal point for all matters related to online safety.

Building on lessons learned over the years and strong cooperation with public authorities, the project aims to promote the positive, responsible, and informed use of the internet and digital technologies by children and young people in their personal, social, and educational lives, as well as in their future careers. This objective is pursued by enhancing their digital competencies and by contributing to the creation of a safer, more child-friendly online environment.
