Safer Internet Day
Over the years, Safer Internet Day has become a landmark event in the online safety calendar. Starting as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project in 2004 and taken up by the Insafe network as one of its earliest actions in 2005, Safer Internet Day has grown beyond its traditional geographic zone. It is now celebrated in approximately 180 countries and territories worldwide.
From cyberbullying to social networking to digital identity, each year, Safer Internet Day aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues and current concerns.
Safer Internet Day occurs every year on the second Tuesday of February. For the 2025 edition, it will be on Tuesday, 11 February.
However, we are moving beyond this, and towards a full month of activities focused around online safety. Indeed, many Safer Internet Centres and SID committees are now organising events, campaigns, activities or other initiatives throughout the month of February each year.
Safer Internet Day has the overarching theme worldwide of "Together for a better internet". The theme remains the same every year. This theme is purposefully kept quite generic to allow each SID committee or SID supporter to customise, adapt, or generally be creative when it comes to SID themes at a national, regional, or local level.
Always locate your country first to find out what is happening near you to mark the day.
Get involved
If you would like to find out more about specific actions and resources in your country, get in touch with your local Safer Internet Centre or Safer Internet Day Committee.
To support you in celebrating Safer Internet Day, we develop a range of promotional materials for each campaign, including key messages and visual materials. As the day approaches, we'll provide a range of media assets, and publish a number of news articles about Safer Internet Day celebrations and activities around the world. If you would like to become an advocate of Safer Internet Day, have a look at our social media plans as well, which are full of inspiration for posts and visuals to lend your support to the day. You can find everything in the About and Get involved sections of the SID website.
Many industry partners, institutions and other organisations support Safer Internet Day (SID) with awareness-raising events and activities, or resource launches, to help make the internet a safer and better place.
If your organisation works across several countries and is committed to creating a safer and better internet for children and young people, and you would like to create a SID supporter profile, please get in touch. If your organisation operates in a single country, please contact your local SID Committee in the first instance for information on how to get involved in national celebrations.
Find out more information about how to convene a SID Committee to coordinate country-wide actions for running a SID campaign. If you think you could take on this important role - or point us to an organisation that can - we'd be delighted to hear from you!
