Safer Internet Day 2025
The 22nd annual edition of Safer Internet Day (SID) took place on Tuesday, 11 February 2025 with a campaign slogan, once again, of "Together for a better internet". Organised within the framework of Better Internet for Kids (BIK) activities by the Insafe network (coordinated by European Schoolnet (EUN)) and INHOPE (the International Association of Internet Hotlines), on behalf of the European Commission, Safer Internet Day 2024 was celebrated in over 160 countries and territories worldwide, with exciting events and activities promoting the safe and positive use of digital technology.
This edition of Safer Internet Day was once again packed with new initiatives and activities. First of all, this edition has a completely new appearance: as part of the wider redevelopment of the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) platform, there’s now a brand new Safer Internet Day website, and more importantly, a new SID mascot, Ally! They are fast, brave, well-equipped, and tech-savvy – a true companion for young people in the digital world. To reflect these changes, a new SID video was also produced.
In addition, throughout January and February, the AdWiseOnline campaign Play smart, spend wisely – mind the hidden costs has been running, with a series of resources released in the week leading up to SID. These include learning modules, webinars, a podcast, youth videos, and interactive activities. With a reach of over 250,000 parents and educators, the campaign aims to empower young people playing games online know their rights and recognise manipulative in-game marketing tactics.
Furthermore, as part of its work on child safety online, the Commission engages with children and young people, empowering and involving them directly, as demonstrated in the first evaluation of the Better Internet for Kids strategy, two years after its initial adoption.
The BIK annual report 2024 was also published as part of the celebrations, highlighting the main achievements and successes of the past year. An accompanying infographic places a specific spotlight on last year's youth activities: for example, they were once again heavily involved in the planning, preparation and delivery of yet another successfully youth-led Safer Internet Forum (SIF).
SID enjoyed widespread support from the EU institutions, with a press release from the European Commission, and dedicated video messages from Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen, and Deputy Director-General of DG CONNECT Renate Nicolay. On social media, posts by Digital EU, BetterNet4EU, Digital Skills EU, EU Code Week, Europol, EC3, the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights, the DG Migration & Home Affairs, DG Consumer Affairs, Council of Europe Children and HaDEA celebrated the day.
Articles about Safer Internet Day were published in the BBC, Computer Weekly, Medium, 20 Minutes, Council of Europe Newsroom on children's rights, Child in the city, Xbox Wire, The Independent UK, Luxembourg Times, News18, Süddeutsche Zeitung, GenDigital, Corriere della Sera, Il Sole 24 Ore, Trend Micro, The Economic Times (India Times), Daily News Tanzania, Times Now, RTE.ie, Techbuzz Ireland, IT Security Guru, Heise Online, to quote only a few.

Safer Internet Day 2024
The 21st annual edition of Safer Internet Day (SID) took place on Tuesday, 6 February 2024 with a campaign slogan, once again, of "Together for a better internet". Organised within the framework of Better Internet for Kids (BIK) activities by the Insafe network (coordinated by European Schoolnet (EUN)) and INHOPE (the International Association of Internet Hotlines), on behalf of the European Commission, Safer Internet Day 2023 was celebrated in almost 190 countries and territories worldwide, with exciting events and activities promoting the safe and positive use of digital technology.
The 21st edition of Safer Internet Day was exceptionally packed with new initiatives and activities: since the European Commission launched the Digital Services Act package – a series of rules and regulations for online platform providers aimed to create a safer digital space for all users – with some rules that are especially designed to protect minors online - a user-friendly booklet was developed to summarise the main content of the articles focusing specifically on the protection of children and young people online, and it is available in all EU languages from the website of the Publications Office of the European Union.
The BIK annual report 2023 was also released on the day, highlighting the main achievements and successes of the past year. An accompanying infographic places a specific spotlight on last year's youth activities: for example, they were once again heavily involved in the planning, preparation and delivery of yet another successfully youth-led Safer Internet Forum (SIF). The efforts undertaken in 2023 to highlight and support the learning opportunities available to all in the digital world, and the importance of ensuring that the largest possible number of users, and especially children and young people, are adequately equipped with the skills and competences they need to handle digital technologies responsibly and respectfully will continue in 2024, as the European Year of Skills will run until 9 May 2024 (Europe Day).
Additionally, the new #AdWiseOnline awareness-raising campaign was launched, focusing on the protection of young people against manipulative marketing practices online, and the corresponding launch of a new research report on such practices, aiming to raise awareness about the online targeting of young consumers, and to shed light on the responsibilities that companies and online platforms must uphold to safeguard young consumers from online influences.
Furthermore, as virtual reality environments are understandably popular with children and young people, and with their online experiences becoming increasingly immersive, we focused on the EU’s virtual worlds strategy, including a mapping of some useful resources from the European network of Safer Internet Centres.
On social media, SID enjoyed widespread support from the EU institutions, with a press release from the European Commission - including quotes by Vice-President for Democracy and Demography Dubravka Šuica and Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton, and a dedicated video message. On social media, posts by Věra Jourová, Digital EU, BetterNet4EU, Emilio Puccio, Caterina Chinnici, Hilde Vautmans, EU Code Week, Europol, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity, the European Research Executive Agency, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training, the European Consumer Centers Network, HaDEA, the European Research Council and DG Migration and Home Affairs celebrated the day.
Articles about Safer Internet Day were published in the BBC, Technical.ly, Medium, The Independent, Council of Europe Newsroom on children's rights, UNESCO News, Xbox Wire, EuroNews, Luxembourg Times, CNBC Tv18, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Zawya, Corriere della Sera, Il Sole 24 Ore, PR Newswire, The Times of India, InfoSecurity Magazine, Deccan Herald, Spectrum News, Times Now, RTE.ie, WRAL TechWire, IT Security Guru, CIO Africa, to quote only a few.

Safer Internet Day 2023
The 20th annual edition of Safer Internet Day (SID) took place on Tuesday, 7 February 2023 with a campaign slogan, once again, of "Together for a better internet".
This edition was particularly special as it marked the 20th anniversary of the celebration of this milestone event, and served as an opportunity to reflect upon the impact of this observance over the last two decades, as well as the recent important developments in EU legislation, such as the new European strategy for a better internet for kids (BIK+), the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the European Declaration on Digital Rights and Principles.
Vice-President Šuica and Commissioner Breton both acknowledged the day with dedicated video messages addressing children’s digital rights and habits, online opportunities and risks, the importance of media literacy skills, and urging policymakers, young people themselves, and all other stakeholders involved to gather and continue discussing how to concretely make the internet a better place for children.
An updated SID celebratory video was launched, gathering over 2,500 views on YouTube alone, and over 20,000 views through dissemination on the SID social media channels over the course of just one day.
On SID, Better Internet for Kids (BIK) launched the new BIK Teacher corner, a special section of the Better Internet for Kids website meant for teachers, educators and other adults working with children and young people, where they can find free information, advice, and suggested resources to help to educate and support youth to safely and positively navigate their digital world. These resources are split into two key types – learning modules and deep dives – and will be regularly updated to reflect emerging issues, and offer appropriate support to teachers and educators.
