About our SID activities
The Finnish Safer Internet Day has been celebrated as a week-long media literacy event since 2013 and it is known as Mediataitoviikko or "Media literacy week". In 2025, the theme of the week is media literacy and sustainable development. We have over 50 partner organisations providing campaigns, events, educational materials or communication support for the nationwide promotion of media literacy. We at KAVI function as the organising party, coordinating and providing curated information on available materials and events for all professionals working in schools, early education, libraries, youth work, museums, private companies and NGOs, who want to take part.
Every year we have around 2,000 registered professionals attending the Media literacy week. The professionals take part in a manner of their own choosing, but they will have a vast variety of material to use: an online Media literacy magazine consisting of nearly 40 articles; media education materials complied by age group in online booklets; a social media campaign from January until the end of Media literacy week. All the materials support and encourage the use of media education resources all year round, not only during the theme week, and they will be published on the Media literacy week website.
What we are doing to create a better internet...
Together with our partner organisations, we have been planning yet again a comprehensive and interesting theme week of media literacy. Like every Media literacy week, all kinds of target audiences will be reached and a wide selection of materials will be created. We will pay special attention to accessible and equal media education among all ages.
In KAVI, our theme of the year 2025 is Sustainable development in media education. For us it means discussing climate change and social sustainability in the context of media education: How can media literacy skills help understand sustainable change, and how can media education be done in a sustainable way? We will make media education work more visible, and encourage our partner organisations to utilise and update previously published materials instead of always developing completely new ones.
According to the theme, this year's new output will be the five different booklets, including resources for media education throughout the year, not only for the theme week.
Additionally, different new media phenomena will be discussed during Media literacy week. The Finnish SIC will organise a webinar about safe media use for the parents and caregivers of little children.
