What we are doing to create a better internet...
In line with the SID slogan "Together for a better internet," we are committed to fostering digital citizenship through education and collaboration. By promoting media and digital literacy, we aim to empower individuals—particularly young people—to navigate the digital world safely, responsibly, and with confidence. In partnership with key stakeholders, we deliver resources, workshops, and initiatives that raise awareness of online risks, while highlighting the positive opportunities the internet offers.
Through the guidance of the Council of Europe’s Digital Citizenship Education framework, we help cultivate critical thinking, encourage respectful online communication, and promote ethical digital behaviour. Our efforts include educational programmes for schools, youth panels, and online campaigns, all designed to equip users with the skills necessary to make informed decisions and engage positively in digital communities.
By fostering a culture of digital inclusion and awareness, we strive to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, can benefit from a safe, secure, and empowering online experience. "Together for a better internet" is not just a slogan—it is a shared responsibility that we embrace by working alongside governments, educators, youth organisations, and other key partners to create a safer and more respectful digital environment for all.
About us
The primary goal of the Portuguese Safer Internet Centre (PT SIC) is to assist children and young people in navigating the unique challenges and opportunities presented by digital technologies. It aims to enhance their media literacy, foster resilience as responsible digital citizens, and continue its efforts to combat CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material) and other illegal online content.
PT SIC runs an awareness-raising centre where children, parents, and educators can access a range of resources. These resources include age-appropriate content, from online safety tips and best practices to MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), all designed to promote a safer and more informed digital experience.
PT SIC is proud to introduce its innovative interactive platform, the CIS Cybersecurity Lab. This collaborative space leverages gamification strategies to engage users and raise awareness about the risks and opportunities of digital technologies, making cybersecurity education both interactive and impactful.
Through its numerous events and campaigns, PT SIC VIII actively develops and implements awareness-raising initiatives that engage directly with its target audiences. These initiatives are tailored to meet the specific needs of children, parents, educators, and other key stakeholders, providing them with valuable information and practical tools to navigate the digital world safely. By organising workshops, seminars, online campaigns, and interactive activities, PT SIC VIII fosters a deeper understanding of online safety, digital citizenship, and the responsible use of technology.
PT SIC continues to run the Youth Hub, its dynamic youth panel where children and young people can openly share their online experiences and engage in meaningful discussions about current digital trends. This platform provides a safe and supportive environment for young people to voice their opinions, raise concerns, and offer insights on topics such as online safety, social media use, digital well-being, and emerging technologies. The Youth Hub also serves as an educational space, offering workshops and activities that encourage critical thinking and equip young people with the tools to make informed decisions online. Through ongoing engagement, PT SIC ensures that the Youth Hub remains a valuable resource for empowering the next generation to navigate the digital world responsibly and safely.
To support parents, educators, and children in navigating issues related to children's use of digital technologies, PT SIC operates a helpline and has strengthened its collaboration with the national 116111 service.
Another key service is its hotline for receiving, analysing, and processing CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material) and other forms of illegal content. This service works in close partnership with the INHOPE network and serves as a crucial component of the national alert platform within the ICCAM technical infrastructure.
