About us
Juventas (formerly Youth Cultural Center - OKC Juventas) is a non-governmental organization founded on January 29, 1996 in Podgorica. That year, a group of students financially supported by the Open Society Institute of Montenegro started working on the Youth magazine Juventas. The aim was to create media focused on young people's ideas, interests, and problems. NGO Juventas emerged from this initiative.
Until 2001, the organization implemented numerous projects focused on the influence of young people on making decisions that are important for their present and future. Juventas published its magazine and its daily newspaper and produced its radio show and ‒ popular among young people ‒ television show. In the course of the first 4 years, he staged two theater plays that won awards at festivals. Debate clubs in Montenegrin and English won awards at national and international competitions. Thus, in 2001, the members of the Juventas Debate Club won 8th place at the Global Competition where they represented Montenegro. Juventas has developed a network of volunteers and implemented other significant projects in the field of conflict resolution, dialogue, tolerance, culture, and media.
A wide range of support programs have been developed such as support programs for pupil parliament (since 2006), youth activism (since 1996) , and youth participation in decision-making (since 1996), and there are also programs of support to increase youth mobility (since 2011), support to social empowerment of Roma people (since 2005), support to the protection of the respect of LGBT rights (since 2005), support to exercise of rights of drug users (since 2005), support for access to rights and services for sex workers (since 2003), support to young people at risk of social exclusion (since 2001) and the development of media literacy (since 2012). Juventas provides direct assistance, supports the improvement of the quality of services, produces and advocates proposals for changes in public policies, and develops the capacities of decision-makers, service providers, and target groups with whom it works.
The Vision of Juventas is Montenegro as a society of social justice where all people feel safe, free, and respected and participate in decision-making. They have the same possibilities and the enjoyment of human rights regardless of differences and personal characteristics.
