About our SID activities

Planned events and initiatives

Several activities have been planned to promote safer internet practices in February 2025.

On 14 February 2025, an info day is scheduled, potentially in Valletta. The event will include an awareness stand to engage with the public, distribution of merchandise and educational materials, and information sharing about our mission and this year’s theme.

A thematic video production is also underway, with a deadline that was set for the end of January. The video, themed 'Be proactive,' is inspired by the Digital Services Act and will feature a child-friendly version of the Act. Adults will explain relevant sections in an accessible manner. This video will be shared with all schools in Malta and Gozo, encouraging them to play it for their students on Safer Internet Day, 11 February.

Throughout February, Awareness sessions in schools will be conducted to educate children about safe and responsible internet use.

Additionally, extensive media engagement is planned for February, including TV and radio appearances where key speakers will promote Safer Internet Day, discuss online safety and the importance of being proactive.

A press release and social media campaign will complement these efforts. A press release will be issued by FSWS ahead of the events to announce the plans for Safer Internet Day and invite public participation. Meanwhile, a series of social media posts will be published to raise awareness and encourage engagement with the events.

What we are doing to create a better internet...

At BeSmartOnline, Malta’s Safer Internet Centre, we are dedicated to empowering individuals, especially young children, to take proactive steps toward creating a safer and more respectful online environment. Guided by the theme 'Be proactive,' and aligned with the principles of the Digital Services Act (DSA), our initiatives aim to encourage children and their caregivers to understand their rights, take responsibility, and take action when encountering harmful or illegal content online.

This year, we are focusing on raising awareness about the importance of reporting illegal content and harmful behaviours online. Through school sessions and a child-friendly adaptation of the DSA, we aim to simplify the complex legal framework, helping young audiences grasp how they can contribute to building a better internet. By empowering children to recognise and report online risks - such as grooming, sexting, and harmful content - we give them the tools to take charge of their digital safety and protect others in their communities.

By fostering a proactive mindset, BeSmartOnline seeks to inspire children and adults alike to take meaningful actions toward a safer internet. Together, with the power of knowledge and collaboration, we can build a digital world where everyone feels empowered and protected.

About us

BeSmartOnline is Malta’s official Safer Internet Centre (SIC), led by the Foundation for Social Welfare Services (FSWS) in collaboration with the Office of the Commissioner for children, the Ministry for education, and the Malta Police force cybercrime unit. This partnership ensures a comprehensive and unified approach to promoting safer internet practices, empowering communities, and addressing the risks and challenges posed by the digital world.
