About our SID activities

The Finnish Safer Internet Day has been celebrated as a week-long media literacy event since 2013 and it is known as Mediataitoviikko or "Media literacy week". In 2026, the theme of the week is media use. We have over 40 partner organisations providing campaigns, events, educational materials or communication support for the nationwide promotion of media literacy. We at Finnish Arts and Culture Agency function as the organising party, coordinating and providing curated information on available materials and events for all professionals working in schools, early education, libraries, youth work, museums, private companies, and NGOs who want to take part.

Every year, we have around 2,500 registered professionals attending the Media Literacy Week. The professionals take part in a manner of their own choosing, but they will have a vast variety of material to use: an online media literacy article collection consisting of over 30 articles; media education materials compiled by age group and sent via newsletter; and a social media campaign from January until the end of Media Literacy Week. All the materials support and encourage the use of media education resources all year round, not only during the theme week, and they will be published on the Media Literacy Week website.

What we are doing to create a better internet...

Together with our partner organisations, we have been planning yet again a comprehensive and engaging media literacy theme week. As with every Media Literacy Week, a wide range of target audiences will be reached, and a wide selection of materials will be created. We will pay special attention to accessible, equal media education for all ages.

At the Finnish Arts and Culture Agency, our theme for 2026 is media use. We chose this theme since the hot topics of today are screen time, phone usage in schools, and social media bans

Additionally, different new media phenomena will be discussed during Media Literacy Week. The Finnish SIC will organise a webinar on recommendations for screen time and meaningful ways to use media for caregivers and professionals working with children aged 0 to 12.

About us

The Finnish Safer Internet Centre (SIC) consists of three partners: Finnish Arts and Culture Agency (awareness, coordinator), Mannerheim League for Child Welfare (awareness, helpline) and Save the Children Finland (awareness, hotline). All partners contribute to Media literacy week (Finnish SID) with the Finnish Arts and Culture Agency being the coordinator and carrying the main responsibility for the campaign. The SIC is located in the capital city of Finland, Helsinki. In SID 2026, the three partners will have a webinar for parents focusing on newly published recommendations on screentime for children aged 0 to 12 by the Finnish National Agency for Education and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare.
