About our SID activities
We are running a two-day hub event to discuss emerging challenges regarding the safe and healthy use of technologies by children and young people with over 50 panellists from different sectors, including civil society, academia, private sector and government. During the event, we will also have the ceremony to deliver our Digital citizenship in action award 2024 to 5 schools that during the last year held transformative initiatives on student leadership, community engagement, digital empowerment, and innovative pedagogical practices.
Additionally, we are carrying out educational activities to all regions of Brazil through our youth ambassador program, as part of SaferNet Youth engagement project "Digital citizen". There are 3 ambassadors and 1 mentor from different parts of Brazil developing educational activities within peer-to-peer methodologies about digital safety, well being, empathy, respect relationship, misinformation and media literacy. They are also mobilizing decentralized activities all over the country.
Besides that, we are coordinating two consultations with educators and teens about the misuse of GenAI, to bring child-cantered perspectives on risks and harm in Brazil, and one workshop to gather feedback and recommendations to improve our support for students and educators in public schools.
What we are doing to create a better internet...
This year's Safer Internet Day in Brazil highlights crucial themes surrounding online safety and digital citizenship. Central to the discussion are the challenges faced by children and adolescents in the digital age, including the urgent need to combat online sexual violence and exploitation. The importance of robust public policies and private sector initiatives to ensure their safety is underscored. Furthermore, the event emphasises the role of education in promoting digital citizenship, media literacy, and human rights in online spaces. Discussions also address the growing concerns of online radicalisation and extremism among youth, and the need for effective countermeasures. Finally, the day recognises the importance of international cooperation in tackling issues like ransomware prevention and fostering a secure online environment for all.
About us
SaferNet is the first-ever NGO in Brazil to establish a multistakeholder approach to protect human rights in the digital environment. It created and has coordinated since 2005 the National Human Rights Cybertipline, the National Helpline and the Brazilian awareness node, and has 20 years of experience in capacity building programmes with educators, young people, legislators, policy makers and social workers. It is leading the debate on online safety and well-being in many national and international fora. Since 2021, SaferNet has been working on the creation of a curriculum on digital safety and citizenship in Brazilian public schools through the "Skills for digital safety and citizenship" project, which has already impacted more than 390 schools and 47,000 students. SaferNet has formal signed agreements with the Ministry of Human Rights, General Prosecutor's Office and many companies in the private sector.
SID Brazil has been coordinated by SaferNet since 2009 in a close partnership with the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br), the Brazilian Network Information Center (NIC.br), UNICEF, the Federal Prosecutors Office and, in 2025, has support from Google, Youtube, Meta and TikTok.
