About our SID activities
We are running a two-day hub event to discuss emerging challenges regarding the safe and healthy use of technologies by children and young people with dozens of panellists from different sectors, including civil society, academia, the private sector and government. During the event, we will also have a ceremony to deliver our Digital Citizenship in Action Award 2025 to three schools that, during the last year, held transformative initiatives on student leadership, community engagement, digital empowerment, and innovative pedagogical practices.
One notable development for 2026 is that, in addition to the traditional press coverage, the event will also feature coverage provided by high school students who are part of a student journalism project, "Imprensa Jovem," in partnership with the São Paulo public school system, ensuring a youthful and engaged perspective in the dissemination of activities. Additionally, we are mobilising decentralised activities across the country, offering activity guides on our website that can be replicated and featured on the Safer Internet Day Brazil 2026 map.
Furthermore, we will conduct training for prosecutors from different states, educational activities with Education Secretariats (government departments), and a workshop with educators on the risks of generative AI.
What we are doing to create a better internet...
The year 2026 presents a pivotal moment for Brazil, with the new and robust law for the protection of children's and adolescents' rights on the internet, known as "Digital ECA," approved in 2025, set to enter into force. The discussion of its effective implementation will be one of the year's most important topics on the digital citizenship agenda.
Furthermore, 2026 marks the first year of mandatory inclusion by Brazilian schools of digital citizenship themes in the curricula of students across all segments of basic education (ages 0 to 17).
These developments reinforce Brazil's crucial stage for strengthening the agenda on this topic, presenting best practices and discussing effective online protection strategies, especially in light of the triad of provision, protection, and participation provided for in the International Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Brazilian Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA, created in 1990).
About us
SaferNet is the first NGO in Brazil to establish a multi-stakeholder approach for the protection of human rights in the digital environment. Since 2005, it has established and coordinated the National Human Rights Cybertipline, the National Helpline, and the Brazilian awareness node. With two decades of experience in capacity-building programmes involving educators, young people, legislators, policy makers, and social workers, the organisation leads the debate on online safety and well-being in numerous national and international fora.
Since 2021, SaferNet has been supporting public schools in Brazil on the creation of a digital safety and citizenship curriculum through the "Skills for Digital Safety and Citizenship" project, which has already impacted over 850 schools and more than 100,000 students. SaferNet has formally signed agreements with different national bodies, such as the Ministries of Justice and Public Security, Human Rights and Citizenship, and Education, as well as the Federal Prosecutor's Office, the Federal Police Office, and various private sector companies.
Safer Internet Day (SID) Brazil has been coordinated by SaferNet since 2009 in a strong partnership with the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br), the Brazilian Network Information Center (NIC.br), UNICEF, and the Federal Prosecutor's Office. Besides our traditional hub event held in São Paulo, we also support different organisations to create their own awareness actions all over the country, with almost 1,400 educational activities registered ever since.
For 2026, our 2-day hub event is supported by Google, YouTube, Meta, and TikTok.
