The European Commission is actively working to combat online child sexual abuse, including sexual extortion. Sexual extortion is the blackmailing of a person with the use of sexualised images of that person in order to extort sexual acts or material, money, or other benefits from them under the threat of sharing the material without the consent of the depicted person (for example, posting images on social media).

The purpose of trafficking in human beings is the exploitation of the person, including sexual exploitation, forced labour, begging, slavery or organ removal. The victim, or trafficked person, is forced or tricked to work against their will. Recruiting, transporting, transferring, housing or receiving people who are trafficked are all crimes. When children are trafficked, the punishment is more severe.

Article 197.7 of the Spanish Penal Code criminalises the disclosure of intimate images without the consent of the individuals involved. This provision aims to protect individuals, including children and young people, from the unauthorised sharing of private and sensitive content. Offenders may face criminal charges for violating this provision, including fines and imprisonment. The law was updated in 2015.

Artificial intelligence has become part of our everyday lives. This includes the increasingly authentic-looking deepfakes that are influencing the lives of children and young people. This factsheet provides an overview of the status quo of deepfakes, shows from a child protection perspective the problems that deepfakes can cause with regard to (sexualised) violence, and offers legal classifications as well as tips and support services.

The program of the summit features new knowledge on children’s lives online and information on the support that the organisations behind the Safer Internet Centre Sweden offer. The program includes The Swedish Agency for the Media’s presentation of three new reports where children and young people’s media use and health, relation to influencers and girls with neuropsyciatric disabilities and online behaviour are examined. There is also a presentation of the Digital Services Act, DSA, from a senior expert of the European Commission.

English Summary:

Sexual exploitation of children is a serious and globally widespread crime that can manifest in many ways, including through so-called livestreamed sexual abuse. To combat this, ECPAT Sweden’s Financial Coalition launched ”Project Indicators” with the long term goal of preventing payments for child sexual abuse.

English Summary:

Ecpat's report "It’s seen as a hack" focuses on children's experiences and attitudes towards sugardating, where adults exploit children for the purchase of sexual services. The report makes it clear that the child's perspective is both crucial and necessary when designing support interventions.

Both children and adults can be at risk of being blackmailed or exploited online. This module explores the nature of sextortion and how online users can protect themselves and seek support.
There are a range of risks that children and adults can encounter online. One risk that has shown a dramatic increase in cases in recent years is that of sextortion, cybercriminals threatening to release sexual or intimate images of a user unless they pay the criminal money or perform another act.
