At the recent Safer Internet Forum, Julie Inman Grant, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, delivered a keynote titled “Why age matters?”. This article, based on that keynote, provides a comprehensive overview of the Australian online safety framework, including the recently adopted social media delay for children under the age of 16.

The study "Safe internet use and parents" conducted by the Centre for Social Informatics at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana in the summer of 2024 shows that a significant proportion of Slovenian parents do not adhere to professional recommendations regarding the age at which children should access the internet, and the extent of daily internet use.

In the seminar, parents and caregivers learned about the various factors on the internet that can negatively affect their children's well-being and mental health, as well as how to mitigate these impacts and ensure their children develop healthily and maintain strong mental health. The Safe.si expert guided viewers through these issues. The recording of the webinar is publicly available on the Safe.si website as well as on the Safe.si YouTube channel and on the ARNES video portal.

 

Webinar for parents on the violence in videogames

A recording of a  60-minute webinar for parents and caregivers on the violence in videogames. The seminar was conducted by Rok Gumzej, a social pedagogue, Logout collaborator, and gamer, who explained the actual impact of violence in video games on children and adolescents. 

The recording of the webinar is publicly available on the Safe.si website as well as on the Safe.si YouTube channel and on the ARNES video portal.

Although promoting media literacy among young users is the top priority, the use of technical measures on the digital devices of younger children can be helpful. The range of technical child protection measures is vast, and they typically combine various functions to keep inappropriate content away from minors. This usually involves setting usage times, filtering content, and blocking certain applications.

A concerning trend among school-age children is the exposure to ultra-violent scenes (torture, beheadings, war scenes) on their smartphones. Alarmingly, 25 per cent of 11 to 18 year olds are engaging in this disturbing behaviour.
