Understanding why, and more so, how age matters requires solid evidence about how children at different developmental stages experience the online world. However, the current evidence base remains uneven. Even so, some European countries conduct comprehensive national studies that examine distinct age cohorts. Findings indicate that children’s digital experiences—and their needs—shift significantly as they mature, underlining the importance of age-specific approaches.

Youth led audio series: Casting the Net

Consent is a fundamental part of all relationships, yet historically, it has been misunderstood or overlooked in society. From outdated norms to gendered expectations, the way we talk about and understand consent has been shaped by cultural and institutional influences. Internet education begins very early, certainly no later than the moment a child is first given a screen-equipped device with internet access (such as a tablet, phone, computer, or even a television).

Educating children about the online world is not a simple task, which is why the Safe.si awareness centre (part of the Slovenian Safer Internet Centre) developed the guide Education for the internet for parents and caregivers of children aged 0 to 10. It’s an excellent resource, especially for parents of preschool-aged children.
