Every year, Child Focus observes an increase in cases related to disappearances and sexual exploitation of minors. In 2024, the organisation opened an average of five new runaway cases per day. These are five young people sending a strong signal that something is wrong in their lives. On the occasion of mental health week, Child Focus introduced a new prevention tool: the MAX-Box.

A significant step forward for child protection in Macedonia occurred as the first children’s embassy in the world (Megjashi) has officially received the decision from the Agency for Electronic Communications (AEC) to operate the European child helpline number 116 111 for the first time in the country. Child Focus deals with six new cases of missing minors every day. Five times a day, this involves a young person who has run away. In 2024, Child Focus handled 542 cases of minors who were sexually exploited (non-consensual sexting, grooming, sextortion, sexual exploitation in prostitution). All these difficult situations have one thing in common: the child or young person had no one to turn to.

AI applications and deepfakes have become a significant part of our everyday lives. That is why the German Awareness Centre klicksafe aims to empower young people, parents and educational professionals to deal with AI and deepfakes with this year's BackToSchool campaign. The campaign runs throughout September and offers new materials and tips for educational practice. One highlight of the campaign will be the klicksafe school lesson on 1 October, which can be streamed by schools nationwide.

On 16 September, Directorate General for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture, and Sport held a youth policy dialogue on cyberbullying to exchange views and hear the perspectives and priorities of young people on how the European Union can develop an action plan against cyberbullying. Participants addressed key issues and provided recommendations to help the European Union tackle cyberbullying.
